Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:
Notes: Lillian Wald has had a lasting impact on nursing and social transformation. Wald became famous for her public health nursing pioneering and social justice and healthcare fairness activism. Wald’s continuous pursuit of socioeconomic determinants of health, creative community-based treatment, and empowerment of underrepresented communities pull me. As I begin my MSN degree and work to become a skilled nurse, Wald’s ideals and activities will help me succeed.
Lillian Wald’s concept of healthcare as a human right and her emphasis on tackling social and economic variables that affect health outcomes coincide with my nursing goals. By researching Wald’s pioneering work in founding the Henry Street Settlement and pushing for marginalized populations’ healthcare access, I want to better comprehend health and social justice. Wald’s focus on community participation and grassroots action motivates me to participate in community health programs and work with many stakeholders to improve health.
In addition, Wald’s home visits and health education initiatives mimic holistic and culturally sensitive nursing care. By following Wald’s community-centered care and cultural competence concepts, I hope to improve my capacity to deliver comprehensive and fair healthcare to various populations. Wald’s legacy as a public health nursing pioneer inspires me to advocate for policies and initiatives that address health inequities and promote health equality. Wald’s unrelenting dedication to social reform and readiness to question the current quo encourage me to transform the healthcare system. Learning from Wald’s activism and leadership techniques, I hope to promote healthcare fairness and social justice. Wald’s legacy shows how nursing can alter health equality and social justice.
Module 2 | Part 2: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics
I have analyzed the relationship between academic integrity and writing, as well as the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics. I have also identified strategies I intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of my academic work while a student of the MSN program, as well as my professional work as a nurse throughout my career. The results of these efforts are shared below.
Directions: In the space below craft your analysis/writing sample, including Part 1 (The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity) and Part 2 (Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work).
Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity
In the space below write a 2- 3-paragraph analysis that includes the following:
- Explanation for the relationship between academic integrity and writing
- Explanation for the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics
- Cite at least 2 resources that support your arguments, being sure to use proper APA formatting.
- Use Grammarly and Turnitin to improve the product.
- Explain how Grammarly, Turnitin, and paraphrasing contributes to academic integrity
Relationship between Academic Integrity and Writing
Academic honesty, accountability, and ethics underpin intellectual activities. Academic honesty depends on writing, a fundamental academic competence. Academic integrity in writing requires source attribution, accurate citation, and originality (Holden et al., 2021).
When students write with academic integrity, they preserve intellectual property and provide credit. To honor others’ contributions to knowledge, cite sources appropriately, whether directly or paraphrased. Integrity in writing promotes trust and impartiality in academia, allowing ideas to be judged based on quality rather than origin (Bieliauskaitė, 2021). Academic writing also helps students think critically and analytically. Students demonstrate their comprehension and advance their disciplines by conducting thorough research and presenting ideas eloquently. Academic integrity keeps this process honest and open, enabling free speech and ethical conduct.
Relationship between Professional Practices and Scholarly Ethics
Professional ethics control relationships, decision-making, and conduct in any sector. Academic ethics underpin professional practices, assuring honesty, objectivity, and responsibility. Openness, intellectual property respect, and responsible research constitute scholarly ethics (Kretser et al., 2019). Academic institutions and human conduct are shaped by these concepts. These ethical concepts are applied in academics’, researchers’, educators’, and practitioners’ daily work.
Responsible information distribution is a major part of scholarly ethics-oriented professional activities. This requires trustworthy, rigorous, and ethical research and precise, transparent communication of findings in papers, presentations, and other academic outputs. Academic professionals also promote diversity, equity, and honesty in a welcoming academy. Scholarly ethics lead to peer cooperation, teamwork, and respect for other perspectives (Puspha Sinnayah et al., 2023). By practicing ethically, researchers boost the legitimacy of their fields and the academic community.
Grammarly, Turnitin, Paraphrasing and Academic Integrity
Grammarly and Turnitin help students and teachers maintain academic integrity in the digital era. These technologies help maintain academic integrity by assuring academic writing quality and originality. Grammarly improves writing clarity, accuracy, and effectiveness. It helps students write better academic papers by catching grammatical, punctuation, and stylistic mistakes. Grammarly helps students take responsibility of their work by offering real-time criticism and ideas, lowering the probability of mistakes or plagiarism.
Instructors use Turnitin to check students’ work for plagiarism (Mphahlele & McKenna, 2019). Turnitin finds similarities in submitted papers against an extensive academic database, suggesting suspected plagiarism for additional evaluation. It deters academic cheating and teaches students about citing sources and academic honesty in writing. Another way to retain academic integrity is to paraphrase, which lets students use others’ ideas without copying them. Paraphrasing entails rewriting material while citing the source. Paraphrasing successfully shows knowledge and critical thinking while preserving the author’s intellectual property.
PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work
Expand on your thoughts from Part 1 by:
- Identifying and describing strategies you intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of your 1) academic work while a student of the MSN program, and 2) professional work as a nurse throughout your career. Include a review of resources and approaches you propose to use as a student and a professional.
Academic Work While a Student
As an MSN student, I am committed to academic honesty and ethics. Following academic integrity policies is crucial. This requires studying plagiarism, citation, and academic misconduct norms (Holden et al., 2021). By following these principles, I ensure that my work accurately reflects my thoughts and properly credits others. I understand the need of responsible research and policy adherence. Research for assignments and projects must be ethical. This requires thorough literature reviews, critical source analysis, and accurate reporting of others’ conclusions. I will also acquire and use data responsibly and with consent, especially in human subject studies.
Collaboration and peer review will help me learn and meet rigorous academic standards, preserving academic integrity. Peer review helps me contribute to academic honesty and quality by providing critical feedback. Effective use of libraries and online resources will improve my writing, research and citation. Using these resources appropriately can boost my academic work.
Professional Work as a Nurse
To offer safe, effective, and compassionate care, nurses must be ethical. Throughout my career, I will employ several strategies to accomplish my obligations honestly. International Council of Nurses (ICN) and American Nurse Association (ANA) ethical requirements are followed (Monroe, 2019). Updating healthcare and nursing skills requires regular training and growth. I can learn to tackle complex ethical issues with honesty through classes, conferences, and certifications.
Many ethical issues in nursing require ethical decision-making. Reflection and advise from experienced colleagues, ethics, and decision-making frameworks will help me make decisions that are ethical. This technique will guide my ethical and patient-centered actions. Patient dignity and rights shall be my professional priority. I will empower patients to make informed treatment decisions, respect their autonomy and culture, and ensure confidentiality. To combat prejudice, injustice, and unethical behaviour, I will monitor and fight for healthcare system structural reform.
My nursing career requires integrity appraisal and self-assessment. Critically assessing my practise, obtaining feedback from coworkers and patients, and improving my practise can help me practise ethically. Self-reflection will help me improve as a nurse and maintain patient and healthcare community trust.
