COM FPX 3700 Assessment 3 Social Media & Healthcare Conflicts

Introduction

Slide 1:

My name is Kristin, and in this analysis, I discuss how social media will escalate conflicts among public figures in the healthcare industry. One of the most significant health-related social media wars in the recent past involved the appearance of Mehmet Oz, a well-known cardiothoracic surgeon and TV personality. Though he used to be a respected academic and medical expert, his promotion of untested medical treatments on The Dr. Oz Show and his contentious remarks during the COVID-19 pandemic caused an enormous backlash online. This presentation will examine the role of social media in the conflict involving Dr. Oz with a focus on the communication practices, the consequent actions, and the attempts (successful and unsuccessful) to correct the situation.

Conflict Description

Slide 2:

The tension with Dr. Mehmet Oz escalated to several levels, starting with his continual promotion of the so-called miracle weight-loss supplements and unproven cures, which attracted criticism on the part of the medical community, on his television show (Gabriel, 2021). This strain manifested itself during the COVID-19 epidemic when he publicly presented hydroxychloroquine as a medication despite its unscientific safety and efficacy (Schwartz, 2022). His arguments immediately spread on Twitter and YouTube, where they were shared and discussed by millions of people. His statements were condemned by the leading medical professionals and bodies, such as the American Medical Association, as they may be used to disperse misinformation and harm the health of the population. The professional conflict turned out to be a full-fledged public debate enhanced by social media outrage.

Slide 3:

Social media exhibited a significant role in the intensification of this conflict. Also on Twitter, such hashtags as Fire Dr Oz and Stop Medical Misinformation went viral, with doctors and health professionals in the field posting threads refuting his statements (Royan et al., 2022). Meanwhile, Oz was vindicating himself on his own social media platforms, and the furore was characterized as an effort to kill innovation. Viral memes, parody videos, and call-outs on such sites as TikTok, Instagram, and Reddit contributed to the spread of anger and ridicule among the population. The high volume of criticism on the Internet forced Columbia University to revisit its role as a faculty member and resulted in mass petitions that called for his termination. This scenario underscored the role of social media in escalating professional conflicts to public conflicts, particularly in situations where credibility and health safety are threatened.

Communication Behaviors

Dr. Oz’s Communication Style and Its Impact

Slide 4:

Social media played a significant role in the intensification of this conflict. This scenario underscored the role of social media in escalating professional conflicts to public conflicts, particularly in situations where credibility and health safety are threatened.

Reactions from Journalists and the Public

Slide 5:

I think that the responses of other medical workers and the general population became more and more aggressive with the development of the conflict. Doctors were fact-checking his statements on Twitter feeds and telling people not to follow his instructions. Faculty at Columbia University put their names to open letters that required him to be taken off the school’s medical school listings. His assertions were mocked by the public health advocates in viral videos and were accused of putting lives at risk. The Spiral of Silence Theory at work: people who defended Oz remained silent so as not to be publicly criticized, and those labelled as critics ran most of the discussion (Hong & Li, 2022). His overly casual communication made people even more outraged, instead of defusing the situation, demonstrating that the voice of a public figure can exacerbate a conflict.

Impact and Consequences

Impact on Dr. Oz’s Reputation and Career

Slide 6:

In my opinion, this dispute significantly affected the credibility and the professional image of Dr. Oz negatively. The man used to be considered a competent surgeon and professor, but with time became viewed as a propagandist of pseudoscience. Columbia University privately severed any formal connections with him, and a good number of health professionals disassociated themselves with his work (Cramer, 2020). Although he still had a fan base, he lost credibility as a medical authority to many people in the healthcare field. This change indicates the extent to which the years of professional credibility may be undermined once the evidence-based standards are challenged by social media controversies.

Broader Societal Impact on Free Speech and Social Media Governance

Slide 7:

Personally, I also saw the conflict as having wider implications on the health communication and trust of the population. His unsubstantiated arguments became viral, which led to confusion among the population regarding evidence-based medicine in the pandemic. It complicated the task of public health agencies to disseminate the correct information, and distrusted medical authorities in general (Cramer, 2020). This example demonstrates that the actions of a single influential healthcare professional on social media can affect the general public’s opinion on the whole profession, making science and healthcare systems less trusted.

Conflict Resolution

Dr Oz’s Approach to Conflict Resolution

Slide 8:

Personally, I do not think that Dr. Oz made much of an effort to resolve the conflict. Instead of accepting or rectifying the false information, he frequently put himself in the role of the victim of unjustified accusations. He never made a public withdrawal or even a clarification of his claims on hydroxychloroquine, despite the scientific studies that proved it was ineffective. Although he later became less vocal about COVID treatments verbally to the public, such silence was not perceived as a sign of responsibility, and it would not do much to rebuild the professional trust (Schwartz, 2022). Such a strategy created unresolved questions concerning his credibility and depicted how phasing out may not be sufficient in resolving the reputational discrepancies.

Alternative Conflict Resolution Strategies

Slide 9:

In my opinion, Dr. Oz would have managed this conflict in a much better way by implementing evidence-based conflict resolution strategies. Firstly, the Interest-Based Relational approach, as an illustration, he would have collaborated with the medical entities to revise and address misinformation in a more public manner through the Interest-Based Relational (IBR) approach and demonstrate accountability (Fridman et al., 2023). Secondly, he would have conducted open talks or forums with the experts in public health to regain trust, and could have used the Communication Accommodation Theory to change his tone to collaborative instead of defensive. Also, he would have regained his credibility by openly owning up to mistakes and pledging to raise the evidential standard, and he would have avoided more harm to his reputation in society.

Conclusion

Slide 10:

The story about the conflict between Dr. Mehmet Oz and the professionals reveals that social media can turn professional disagreements in the healthcare industry into a full-fledged controversy. Although he also defended himself via social media, his dismissive and defensive communication only exacerbated this reaction, hurting his career as well as his standing with the public in terms of medical information trust. This case shows the necessity of healthcare professionals to apply clear, evidence-based, and collaborative communication strategies via the Internet. Effective policies, responsibility, and ethical dialogue are the keys to preventing and solving conflicts in the modern digital health setting.
